I have loved strawberries all of my life. There is even a poem floating about that my father wrote when I was 3 years old about my love of them. So I can state the fact that it is a life long love. My favorite birthday dessert is Shoney’s Big Boy restaurant Strawberry Pie! Honestly just a large bowl of fresh strawberries will do anytime.
My first mother in law was a tenant farmer wife. We would visit their farm every Sunday after church services for a weekly visit. She always served up her homemade strawberry freezer jam served on homemade hot biscuits! Oh my goodness what a heavenly experience. She knew how much I loved them and always served them up for our visit. So yes, I am seriously addicted to strawberries, especially fresh ones.
I try not to make a grocery run more than every ten days or so. That was done about a week ago. A friend texted me to let me know of a sale going on at Publix. I’ve never been so excited about a sale. They have fresh large strawberries for .99 cents per 16oz carton!! Evidently their supplier has an over abundance of strawberries due to unusually high amounts of rainfall. Rather than trying to make a profit, Publix management decided to use them as a draw to get people into the store. I was all over that. I went yesterday and bought 10 cartons and back today for ten more. All of those were destined for the freezer. I may make another trip for enough to make a few jars of preserves. But at least I have 20 quarts in the freezer for this winter.
All I did was stem, wash and bag. I left them whole as I will probably use them baked in breads and mashed with sugar for dribbling over my wonderful oat flour biscuits 😉. There was no need to spend time slicing them for that. It also kept me focused on only using one carton per bag. Strawberries are famous for keeping well long term in the freezer.
