Blue heron and friends

One of the advantages of living near a river is the abundance of places to hike and catch a glimpse of the wildlife that thrive there. This beautiful sunny day was quite warm and I found a more secluded area off the beaten path that I had never explored. The shade on the shore drew me in and I was gifted with a glimpse of an elusive blue heron. There was a time a few years ago that this type sighting was very rare as they were almost wiped out when one of their natural nesting islands was destroyed by a Cormorant flock taking over and killing the trees with their discharge. But it seems they are making a comeback to the area and that thrills my soul. I see more and more young birds like this one although it is rare I see one of the older fully bearded ones. This particular heron amused me as he seemed to be wanting the attention of the large group of local turtles clambering for their share of the warm sunshine.
