Monday is our 24th wedding anniversary. With impending bad weather predictions, we decided to go a restaurant we haven’t visited in 20 years last Friday. The meal was exceptional as was expected but it was after dinner that brought up long ago memories. We decided to stroll down the street for a bit before heading home and encountered a couple of homeless gentlemen. One had a guitar so we stopped to listen. I got to talking to the other and mentioned I had done a street photography shoot many many years ago in this very spot, capturing the current homeless forever in time. He mentioned one man called three feet…. yes Three Feet was his handle. That prompted me to bring up my website, www.imagesbydonnau.com, on my phone to show him the photos. He correctly named a couple other men in the photos, proving he actually knew them and I had just missed capturing his own photo on that day for some reason. I was thrilled to find that Three Feet was now employed by a local university as an art teacher and had an apartment. This simply made my day, because years ago he was an amazing street artist utilizing spray paint on paper.
Sadly, one of the gentlemen that I had photographed lost his life in a fire in an abandoned house a few years back. But another, I was told, is still roaming the streets in his helmet and apocalyptic style wardrobe. While this information was both happy and sad, I was glad to have gained current knowledge on the lives of some very interesting past portrait subjects.
Both my husband and myself signed the guitar as requested and I snapped some photos with my phone to add to my street photography section of my website…. this was the one time I didn’t have my camera on me since it was date night. I plan to process these in black and white format before adding to my official site. Uncle Steve was thrilled for the attention. The guitarist, Rodney Winters was a bit more shy.
